Omar Mahfoudi est âgé de 37 ans et originaire de Tanger (Maroc). Il peint, filme et photographie avec force les contradictions propres à son pays depuis 15 ans.

« L’art est mon auto-thérapie, à travers laquelle j’explore sans relâche ma nature inconnue. J’ai commencé à dessiner avant que je ne sache écrire et ce qu’était l’art. C’est quelque chose qui m’est venu naturellement et m’a permis d’explorer d’autres images et destins que ceux portés par ma société ou des visions orientalistes. J’ai eu la chance d’avoir un professeur au collège qui m’a encouragé dans ma pratique, ce qui n’était pas le cas de ma société / religion, et à partir de là je me suis intéressé à l’histoire de l’art. Par la peinture, la photographie et la vidéo, je tente de réinventer l’histoire de l’être humain par des émotions, parce que je viens d’une culture où l’art figuratif est interdit.
De même, dans ma culture, l’érotisme est limité à une hypocrite et mince partie de la vie, bien que le sensuel y soit très important. Le corps est constamment à l’avant-plan de ma vision, et surtout les corps, qui sont présents dans la population, via le handicap, à Tanger, sans que cela ne nous soit caché, en travaillant et mendiant, mutilée. J’essaie de poser des questions sur les corps et la sexualité dans la vie quotidienne à travers l’érotisme propre à la peinture. Aujourd’hui, je regarde le monde d’un point de vue plus politique et humaniste et cela donne lieu à un nouvel axe de travail avec la série des « Militaires », des « Egarés », ou « Botanica » qui fleurte avec l’abstrait.

Biography: Art is my self-therapy through which I explore unrelentingly my unknown nature. I started drawing before I knew how to write and before I knew what art was. It was something that came naturally to me and allowed me to explore other images and destinies than were given to me by my society, ie. Orientalist visions of the self or ending up on the street or unemployed. I was lucky enough to have a teacher in middle school who recognized that I had that ability, though it was not one that was encouraged by my society/religion, and from then on I became interested in the history of art. Through painting, photography and video, I try to reinvent and rewrite the history of the human being by way of emotions because I come from a culture in which representational art is prohibited.
Likewise, in my culture, eroticism is restricted to a hypocritical and fenced off section of life, though the sensual is a very important part of it. The body is constantly at the fore of my vision, and especially mutilated bodies, which are present in the large handicap population of Tangier who are not hidden, but instead work or beg. I try to bring questions of the body and sexuality into daily life through the eroticism of paint.
For the last 4 years I have been looking at the world from a political and humanist point of view, and this gives birth to a new axis of work. The « military » series is an example, such as “Egarés” or “Botanica”.
